To Friends and Colleagues of Intelligent Medical Devices: My vision for IntelligentMDx is to demonstrate that global health innovation is best driven by a focused, milestone- and market-driven team. The health care divide between rich and poor is not just a developing world problem. It is a problem in every corner of our flat world. Viruses and bacteria show no prejudices in terms of who they infect and kill. Education programs can prevent infection with known pathogens. But what about the continuous stream of new bugs that invade our airspace every year? Resistant strains of bacteria. Mutant strains of lethal flu. The need for more effective understanding of these pathogenic disease targets is critical to our building of better diagnostics, treatments and vaccines. IntelligentMDx’s excellence is aimed at optimizing target identification. Its first set of products showcases this capability as a series of diagnostics. Success at IntelligentMDx will be measured ultimately in reduced morbidity and mortality from common critical infections such as pneumonia. A patient with a hacking cough sitting next to you in the waiting room at your local emergency room does not walk in stating that he or she has pneumococcal pneumonia. He or she will simply state his or her symptoms. With IntelligentMDx’s smart test capability, life threatening conditions such as pneumonia can not only be definitively diagnosed but also, with the detection of resistance, treated effectively and in real time.
